Better Servers Soon?

For the past month or so we’ve been evaluating whether it is worth it to upgrade our now very old Dual Opteron 248 based servers.  We currently have one quad core CPU being used in the form of an Intel Xeon Clovertown and it has shown that it destroys our Opterons in MySQL, and web pages serving.  This of course if pretty obvious when you factor in it’s 4 cpu’s vs 2 cpu’s but cheaper for us than what our opterons are costing us!  Now I’m not making any promises yet (it’s on the blog which makes it not official) but we’re looking to upgrade our Dual Opteron 248’s to quad core Xeons in August or September.  That isn’t even the best part about this whole situation, we also have plans of introducing a much better raid system in the form of raid-10.  It should hopefully provide even better performance but it will also mean it will no longer be possible to grab instant backups we’ve generated.  We’ve found that most people rather generate new ones anyways so we’d rather have a faster hard drive system.

Well that is my update for a bit, I’m going to try to be more active with our blog it is just tough with so much we have going on right now in the works that simply is not official yet but hopefully will be soon.
